Is Your Major For You?

Is Your Major For You?

Do you ever feel like the major you've chosen wasn't really for you?  Maybe you just have no idea what you want to make with your life.  Well hopefully the story of my subject, Mr. Welch, will give you a clearer outlook on what choice fits you best.  Steven Welch, an assistant professor, entrepreneur, and my adviser.  I'd say Mr. Welch was a better looking older man with glasses and grey hair, but he always had this stern but kind look about him that just made you feel comfortable.  He's a very driven man with a wife and two kids, and he always has their interests in mind.  He likes to say, "If you have the drive of a 2.5 GPA then your going to get a 2.5 wife, but work for a 4.0 and you'll have yourself a model."  Clearly he says it as a joke, but it's a great line anyways because he means you have to work for what you want, nothing is a free pass.

Mr. Welch doesn't teach any large classes, so that allows him to really make connections with his students.  He keeps their goals in mind and tries to guide them in the best possible direction for their situation.  Steven's classroom being quite plain was odd, but he brightens up the room with his comedy and inspiration.  Mr. Welch tells you the blunt truth and holds nothing back, which in my opinion that's a quality to admire.  Even though Mr. Welch's desk is not the most organized with papers scattered, pens everywhere, and with not much room for error he does an amazing job, as does most teachers.

I talked to one of his students named Ashley and she had nothing but nice things to say about her professor.  She described his teaching technique as, "fast but comprehensive," then proceeded to explain how he helps his students understand instead of leaving them in the dust.  Even tho a big focus of Mr. Welch's is international business he understands that new college students may not know exactly what they are doing or what they want, so even if it means losing a student he helps you find out your interests and what field they would be best for.  He being a highly recommended adviser and professor in general, and when it comes between his businesses or teaching, he prioritizes teaching, witch in a business aspect it's always business first.  However, it just goes to show Mr. Welch's priorities and what kind of a man he's known to be.
